
Problem
Modern desktop setups often lack a sense of character — they prioritize performance and minimalism but fail to evoke the emotional connection found in earlier Apple designs. The original acrylic bases from Apple's early-2000s products carried a distinctive identity: warm transparency, depth, and a tactile relationship between material and technology. Today, this design language has almost disappeared, leaving a gap between nostalgia and the contemporary aesthetic of precision-machined aluminum.
Solution
This project reinterprets Apple's classic acrylic stand for the Mac Mini, merging retro character with modern refinement. By revisiting the transparent acrylic base through today's material techniques and digital aesthetics, the design brings back that sense of visual depth. The "liquid glass" surface treatment, inspired by iOS's fluid interface effects, creates a dynamic reflection that shifts with light and movement — connecting physical design to the evolving visual language of Apple's ecosystem.
Challenge
The main challenge was achieving a balance between homage and innovation — maintaining the emotional essence of early Apple design without falling into mere imitation. Material behavior, optical clarity, and light diffusion had to be carefully refined to preserve the clean geometry while introducing a sense of depth and softness. The precision of the interface between acrylic and metal was critical to make the base appear as a single, unified object rather than a layered assembly.
